How long does it take to get a black belt?
It's different from system to system and school to school. With us it takes at least three and a half years. We require the student earn 32 credits before testing to advance to the next belt rank. One credit is earned for each class attended. A credit can also be earned for attending an approved seminar or competing in a tournament; one credit for each event competing in.
For more information on our belt ranking system go to our CURRICULUM page.
Does my child have to compete in tournaments?
Yes, and for several reasons, including:
1) Tournament competition is required for advancement to the next full color belt. You can go from white to high white (white belt with a yellow stripe) without competing, but you'll have to compete before you advance to solid yellow belt.
2) Tournaments better prepare you for a real life confrontation. They put you in a anxious, somewhat stressful, situation where you are face to face kicking and punching a stranger who is also trying to kick and punch you. However, there are rules in competition and most are aimed at safety and protecting the competitors. It doesn't matter how good you are at kicking and punching pads in class, if you don't acquire experience with the emotions and physicality of tournament completion against a stranger, you'll likely freeze in a real life situation; and
3) We're a sports orientated program. If you don't compete it would be like being on a football, basketball, or volleyball team and all you do is practice and don't play any games. Tournaments are fun and rewarding. You meet some very nice people from other local schools, and when we travel out of state you meet folks from all over the USA, and you do make a lot of friends in the process.
Is Taekwondo safe?
While there is a chance of injury in any sport or recreational activity, Taekwondo is much safer than most popular sports. Martial arts in general do not even make The Ten Most Dangerous Sports for Kids list, or the 15 Most Dangerous Sports in America.
Do you do seminars or demos?
Yes. We have conducted Self-Defense seminars at Cabrini High School and Mount Carmel Academy, and demonstrations at the Metairie JCC for Family Day and birthday parties. Contact us for more information: 504 232-0131
