Louisiana Sport Taekwondo
About Us

Louisiana Sport Taekwondo (LLC) is a club dedicated to the Korean martial art of Taekwondo (TKD) and participating in organized TKD tournaments. Our focus is on World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) style competition (aka Olympic style), but we also participate in International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) style tournaments. We also teach practical self-defense skills which uses both TKD and Hapkido techniques.

We are open to students interested in participating in the sporting aspect of Taekwondo. There are many traditional Martial Arts schools in our community, or ones with more focus on self-defense, but that's not entirely us. We are similar to any other sporting activity you or your child might get involved in. The emphasis is on competition. However, we do have the added aspect of learning and practicing practical street-smart self-defense. We believe that the stress in contact competition better prepares you for a real life confrontation.

Louisiana Sport Taekwondo is an officially registered organization with the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union). We are in the Southern District, which is comprised of Louisiana and Mississippi. Louisiana Sport Taekwondo has the only Taekwondo school in the area that actively participates in AAU Regional, District and National Competitions. We have several National Champions as instructors and members of our school.

What We Teach
forms FORMS
We learn, practice and compete with both WTF and ITF style forms (poomse, kata). These are known as the Taeguek (WTF) and the Chon-Ji (ITF) families. Forms are predesigned patterns of punching, blocking and kicking techniques that helps the student perfect the technique and develope the muscel memory to use the techniques when neccessary. See Sample Video.

point_sparring OLYMPIC SPARRING
WTF style sparring is also known as Olympic Sparring. In competition play we wear head gear, chest protector, and forearm, shin, and instep pads. We have exposed (bare) fist, heels and toes. It is full contact sparring with rules designed for safety and fair play. See Sample Video.

point_sparring TKD POINT SPARRING / SPORT KARATE
For TKD Point Sparring and Sport Karate competitions we wear head gear, foam dipped gloves, shin guards and full foot guards. Contact rules are different from Olympic sparring and often less forceful contact is sufficient to score. That's not to say its all light contact. It can still get rough out there. See Sample Video.

hapkidoSELF-DEFENSE / HAPKIDO
Color belts will become proficient at self-defense techniques against an attack like a punch or grab where the defender uses a quick, simple, block and counter to defend themself. As students advance in their skills and awareness they will learn Hapkido techniques to defend against grabs, holds, and weapons such as a stick, knife, and gun.

elite_trainingELITE SPORTS TRAINING
We train our athletes at an elite level for competition. While still employing traditional methods, we also use modern training techniques based on scienticic research. We work on speed, agility, power, flexibility, footwork, reaction time, and match management. We develope the athlete's body and mind's ability to compete at the elite level.

pyungsoodo OPSMA - PYUNG SOO DO
We train in conjunction with the Open Palm System Martial Arts School in Pyung Soo Do. OPSMA also trains at the JCC gym. We share students and they can attend classes for both programs. A student can earn belts in both systems with no increase in tuition. Visit the OPSMA website By Clicking Here.

We follow the WTF Belt Ranking System. Students progress at their own pace and do not test for rank advancement until they are ready. We don't set someone up to fail or give them a belt just because they paid their fees. A student must be qualified to wear the rank of a Louisiana Sport Taekwondo martial artist.
We also follow the WTF Time Limits for Black Belt Promotions.

Our Dojang

We train in the gymnasium of the Goldring-Woldenberg JCC-Metairie located at 3747 W.Esplanade Ave. Phone: 504 887-5158. Bathrooms with lockers and showers are available for your use. We have access to the swimming pool and the outside field for club activities. Gym members have access to these on their own as well as the upstairs track, weight room, aerobics equipment, and the basketball court. You do not need to be a member of the JCC or the gym to be a member of Louisiana Sport Taekwondo. However, gym members do get a discount on TKD membership and have more access to the gym. We recommend gym membership so you can take advantage of all the JCC has to offer to get you in shape.
